Sometimes we think literature is only for analysis, but this is meant to expand the ways we can learn from and interact with a literary text. It also gives more voice to students, allowing them to explore types of writing that feel natural to them
Students will have an opportunity to speak with other students about their reading, more like a typical class setting. Working together through discussion deepens understanding of a text.
Students will receive timely feedback on written work and time to revise and reevaluate this work.
Summer is supposed to be fun, so meeting others and working together is a different (and more fun) way to practice analytical skills
Goal: Read a challenging novel and consider what matters. We will be reading from some non-fiction texts in addition to the novel, in order to consider how best to read and what to write about. Discussion and reading based, but with test-based writing practice. We will work verbal skills as well as writing skills.
Course Product
- A short analytical essay with revision and rethinking practice
- A creative non-fiction piece (personal essay) in order to creatively explore the world of the novel
- A reflective journal
- A presentation to argue for what is real and what isn’t within the novel
