What You'll Do
Craft a cool, custom duct tape case designed for a special object. Measure, cut and create super-strong, super-flexible tape sheets, tailor-made to fit your object to a T.
Be determined as you master tricky, sticky duct tape construction, adding a secure flap to keep the case closed and persevering until your design is done. Learn how to add upgrades like straps, pockets and fringe so you can keep refining your case after class ends.
Note:
Your kids will come away with some ideas about how to take their case to the next level—which means they may want to keep working after the allotted class time is over.
While we offer a similar class for younger kids, the pacing and content of this class is carefully calibrated for rising 6th – 8th graders.
What You'll Need:
Materials
- A special object (5 x 7″ or smaller) to make your case for
- 2 rolls of duct tape in different colors, or 1 roll + a second material: colored paper, fabric (thin and non-stretchy) or thin cardboard (like a cereal box); if the whole case is made of duct tape, you may need up to 8 feet.
- Scissors
- Ruler
- A laminated (plastic coated) grocery tote bag (preferred), an oilcloth tablecloth or a vinyl 3-ring binder that can endure duct tape being temporarily adhered to and removed from it
Technology
- Computer or tablet with speaker and camera
- Internet access
- Zoom application installed, signed in with child’s name
Additional Prep
- Check to see if your child can rip or cut a 4″ piece of duct tape off a roll by themselves. If they can’t (or if it’s tricky), use one of these methods to create a duct tape dispenser at their workstation before class:
- Easy:Turn a chair or small table sideways and loop the duct tape roll(s) over a leg.
- Less easy: Tape something long and rigid to the top of their workstation (ideally something wide at one end, like a wooden spoon), so that the wide end extends off the side of the table to hold the tape roll(s). Use a tape plus sign on the other end for extra stability. (Use painter’s tape if you’re worried about residue on your table.)
What You'll Take Away
- Duct tape construction techniques – Ideas for additional upgrades to your case and other projects you can try
- The skills to be determined and persevere until you reach your goal
- A custom duct tape case for a special object
