Responsibility-Developing useful habits in our teenage years helps us prepare for the responsibility of college. Older children already know to throw away their trash, yet they need help to manage responsibility over class choice, time management, study skills, volunteering, and money. At Olive, we know how to mentor older children by asking questions, assessing outcomes, and listening to their concerns. For example, this might include making a study schedule, drafting an email to a teacher, or discussing ways of recovering from a low grade. When older children can problem-solve with an understanding adult, it makes the decision process transparent and flexible, leading to better decisions and greater accountability. It’s especially important to listen and guide without judgment, since the ‘tween’ years can invite much peer comparison and judgment already. Instead, adults can share our own experiences to bring compassion to the struggle.
