What You'll Do
Craft a cool, convenient carrying case to hold something special. Fortify a paper foundation with super-strong duct tape, then add a flap and securing strap to keep your case closed.
Be determined as you master the tricky, sticky basics of duct tape construction, persevering until your case is complete. Learn how to add upgrades like straps, pockets and fringe so you can keep refining your case after class ends.
Note:
Your kids will come away with some ideas about how to take their case to the next level—which means they may want to keep working after the allotted class time is over.
While we offer a similar class for older kids, the pacing and content of this class is carefully calibrated for rising 4th – 5th graders.
What You'll Need
Materials
- 1-2 rolls of duct tape (you’ll only need about 6-foot; multiple rolls offer color options)
- 2 sheets of standard-size paper (any type or color)
- Scissors
- Ruler
Technology
- Computer or tablet with speaker and camera
- Internet access
- Zoom application installed, signed in with child’s name
Additional Prep
- Check to see if your child can rip or cut a 4″ piece of duct tape off a roll by themselves. If they can’t (or if it’s tricky), use one of these methods to create a duct tape dispenser at their workstation before class:
- Easy: Turn a chair or small table sideways and loop the duct tape roll(s) over a leg.
- Less easy: Tape something long and rigid to the top of their workstation (ideally something wide at one end, like a wooden spoon), so that the wide end extends off the side of the table to hold the tape roll(s). Use a tape plus sign on the other end for extra stability. (Use painter’s tape if you’re worried about residue on your table.)
What You'll Take Away
- Duct tape construction techniques
- Ideas for additional upgrades to your case and other projects you can try
- The skills to be determined and persevere until you reach your goal
- A custom duct tape case for a special object
