This entry level sailing class will definitely give kids a chance to get their "sea legs". Camps meet Monday - Friday (9 am-3:30 pm) at Lake Merritt Boating Center (568 Bellevue Ave. within Lakeside Park) in the Sailing Classroom (corner classroom). The campers start off learning the parts of the sailboat and by week's end they'll understand wind direction as it relates to propelling and more importantly, controlling their sailboat. Games and drills on the water will help to teach these basic skills. Completion of Basic Sailing does not guarantee advancement. No experience is needed, but a swim evaluation is required. If your child does not have a swim evaluation verification on file from past sailing program participation at Lake Merritt (Sailing camps count but Explorer pool sessions do not count) a swim evaluation will have to be completed before the first day of camp. The evaluation consists of swimming 25 feet and then treading water for one minute, as well as swimming for one minute and floating on a retrievable floatation device. Please call 238-2196 to obtain swim evaluation form or download the pdf at www.sailoakland.com under "Resources" at the bottom of the page. Before care (8 am-9 am) is available every morning and aftercare (3:30-6 pm) is available every afternoon at the Boating Center. $15 per day fee covers before and/or aftercare. Any child not picked up by 3:30 pm will automatically be signed into aftercare. Any child not picked up from aftercare by 6 pm will be charged $1 for each minute late after 6 pm. After 6 pm, pick-up will be located inside the office. Late fees must be paid in cash only. On Monday morning, please tell the Lakeside Park parking kiosk that your child is enrolled in a Boating Center camp and they will provide free access. Once in the park, a parking pass will be provided by the instructors at drop-off, which can be shown at the kiosk for the remainder of the week for free access for drop-off and pickup only.
