Philosophical Foundations of the Catholic Faith introduces students to the fundamentals of Catholic morality and natural law, and develops an understanding of Catholic Christianity relative to other world religions. In the first semester several theologically independent approaches to ethics and morality will be examined: Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics, Kant’s Deontology, Rights Theory, Utilitarianism, and more. The study of these ethical systems ultimately leads to the question, “How does Christian and Catholic moral teaching add to and inform the moral life?” Second semester, students will study world religions including Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others. This is intended to deepen students understanding of their own faith while developing an appreciation of the unique elements and common threads found among these ancient traditions, for the purpose of purpose of entering into dialogue with members of other faith traditions.
