Make your own one of a kind artist book! Learn the basics for creating artist books using printmaking and binding techniques. Look at different methods of construction, and develop and learn a variety of bookmaking techniques to create eye-popping artist books, comics and zines.
Mixed Media Madness- June 15, 2020 — June 19, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Explore color, shape, pattern, and texture using mixed media such as paint, collage, graphite, and sculpture to actively investigate the world around you. Create abstract and representational places, objects, and human and animal forms, and experiment with diverse materials to express your ideas unlimitedly!
The Urban Naturalist- June 22, 2020 — June 26, 2020 (Ages 11-17)
Are you interested in drawing, the urban environment, and maps? In this workshop, you will create a series of hand-drawn illustrated maps of the local flora, using a variety of drawing and painting media such as color pencil, ink, and watercolor. Working in the studio and the outdoors, you’ll learn to draw from nature, identify different plant life in the area, and hone your observational and drawing skills.
Fun, Fierce Fairy Tales- June 22, 2020 — June 26, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Explore elements of storytelling and story board paneling to create your very own fairy tales! Inspired by fairy tales from around the world, you will use painting, drawing, and collaging to change, re-tell and invent your own stories. Create new settings with unique characters and adventures to share!
Tuning In: The Kala Youth Podcast Project- June 29, 2020 — July 2, 2020 (Ages 11-17)
oin the youth podcast crew! In this class, engage with the world around you by tuning into the sound/s in the surrounding environment. Gain experience conceptualizing, narrating, and structuring a podcast. Learn how to operate a sound recorder, and experiment with best practices for recording sounds professionally. You will learn about and record different kinds of sounds: ambience, sound events, voiceover, and interviews. Choose one or a few recordings to create into a final podcast to share by the end of the week.
Photo Play: Zines- June 29, 2020 — July 2, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
How do you see the world? In this interdisciplinary workshop, you’ll learn the basics of photography using digital cameras or smartphones, engage in low-tech editing and printing, and produce a mini-zine of your own work. Working individually and in small groups, you’ll experiment with perspective, shadows, shapes, and storytelling, inspired by the mysteries and playfulness of our world.
The Past & Present: Draw & Paint What You See- July 6, 2020 — July 10, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Looking to art history for inspiration, you will render in wet and dry media to create large and small scale artworks. Using materials such as watercolor, ink, oil, and chalk pastels, enjoy a week of experimentation with fun art techniques and materials used by various modern and contemporary artists. Explore diverse imagery and themes related to the city, people, animals, and nature.
Sense of Place: The Art of Miniatures & Dioramas- July 13, 2020 — July 17, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Explore 2 and 3-dimensional arts by making miniatures and creating your own dioramas. Experiment with scale, color, texture, materials, and found objects to construct small-scale, intimate spaces and worlds that unlock the imagination, offering new perspectives and stories to share with others.
Sew, Weave and Felt: Fiber Art Creations- July 20, 2020 — July 24, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Let’s look at animals, nature and people as inspiration for colorful works of fiber art! We will practice drawing from life and photos and use our drawings to construct our own stuffed creatures, wet felted landscapes, weavings, and even self portraits! You will learn and use simple sewing techniques, embroidery, weaving and felting to make unique works of art.
Screen Printing: Editions of Creativity- July 20, 2020 — July 24, 2020 (Ages 11-17)
Learn the hands on process and techniques of screen-printing. Compose your own visuals to create unique posters, tote bags or t-shirts. This week will provide an overview of layered image making, layout and design to create limited edition artworks and culminate in a print exchange. Create something spectacular to share with others!
Teen Studio Workshop: Drawing & Painting- July 27, 2020 — July 31, 2020 (Ages 11-17)
Practice different drawing and painting skills in a fun, creative environment. Learn about line quality, shading, color, and composition while drawing from observation and reference, while improving technical and representational. There will be opportunities to draw the figure, facial expressions, and portraits as well as still life and the landscape/environment. Students will each create a small series as a final project with subject matter and media of their own choice.
Monsters, Creatures, and Myths- July 27, 2020 — July 31, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Dive into mythology and monsters while exploring drawing techniques and materials to create creatures from your imagination. Learn the basic techniques for drawing geometric shapes like cones, spheres, cubes, and adapt these techniques through recombination to craft your creatures. Develop character traits, expand on details, and let the narrative guide your imaginative drawings.
Photography and The Self- August 3, 2020 — August 7, 2020 (Ages 11-17)
Learn the basics of photography using digital cameras or smartphones. Dive into the visual exploration of who you are and who you want to be. Experiment with perspective and storytelling, as well digital editing to produce self-portraits in different settings and using different techniques.
Sculptural Play- August 3, 2020 — August 7, 2020 (Ages 5-10)
Explore concepts and techniques of a sculptural practice working with wire, clay, mobiles, found objects, and paper mache. Play with scale, balance, line, shapes, and textures, and create sculptures from observation and the imagination. From the real to the fantastical, discover the endless fun of sculpture!
