The High School Emerging Writers Institute is a specialized program for teen writers to dig deep into one genre: Fiction, Non-Fiction or Poetry. Similar to our program for younger writers, students are challenged through small group seminars. In these seminars, and at daily writing workshops, students investigate the fundamentals of storytelling and discover how to read like writers. Writers will also read and experiment with new sub-genres in a safe, exploratory environment. Scheduled writing time and one-on-one instructor evaluations help students develop good writing habits that will serve them year round. By the end of the week, students will share polished pieces for publication in their own literary anthology.
Each week will focus on a specific major:
Fiction
- In our fiction week, young writers create an engaging story using the tools taught over the course of the week. By exploring different sub-genres of fiction (science fiction, realistic fiction, and thriller to name a few!), high school writers will hone their ability to create engaging, realistic characters, to convey a sense of place, to build suspense and to use language and imagery to make stories come alive.students will work on a capstone fiction piece of their choice throughout the week that will be published and sent home in a camp anthology.
Creative Non-Fiction
- In our non-fiction week, young writers learn to convey the real world in a creative and expressive way. By exploring different genres of non-fiction (memoir, personal essays, travel writing and biography to name a few!), high school writers will hone their sense of place, ability to write realistic dialogue, descriptive skills and will focus on merging of research and facts into creative writing. Students will work on a capstone non-fiction piece of their choice throughout the week that will be published and sent home in a camp anthology.
Poetry
- In our poetry week, young poets express themselves through various different forms - narrative, lyric and dramatic. By exploring different genres of poetry (cento, ekphrasis, sonnet, free verse, haikus and more!), high school poets will hone their voice, study form, rhythm,
meter and figurative language. Unlike fiction and non-fiction weeks, students will not focus on one single capstone work but will instead write a collection of poems that will be publish sent home in a camp anthology.
