The Japanese Cultural Experience

About

What comes to your mind when you hear Japanese culture? Origami? Tea ceremony? Kendo? Anime? Manga? J-pop? Whatever came to your mind, you are in the right place! Japanese culture is mixed with long lasting traditions and new concepts.

This course introduces students to both traditional culture and pop-culture in one week. We plan to cover the topics that include origami, calligraphy, flower arrangement, manga, anime, games and pop music. Classes are structured to consists of lectures and hands-on activities for each topic. So bring your curiosity and experience something completely different!

UMBC’s Secondary Teacher Education and Professional Training for English Language Learners (or STEP T for ELLs) program has been awarded an additional year of funding by the U.S. Department of Education. The program is funded through the Office of English Language Acquisition.

Thirty percent of slots for the How Girls Code camp workshops are eligible for needs based scholarship, including Free And Reduced Meals (FARM) scholarships that cover 80% of tuition. The UMBC Education Department also offers 20 community youth full merit based scholarships from schools where UMBC student teachers are placed.
