Water Babies
For Students from 3 months to 3 years. A parent or guardian is required to be in the water with the student
Students are currently working on:
- Pool safety
- Introduction to swimming skills through songs and games in a warm environment
Pink Ribbon Level
A child who gets into the water without a parent or guardian or to a graduate of the Water Babies program
Students are currently working on:
- Participating in a regular class safely
- Not crying for three weeks in a row
Rainbow Ribbon Level
A child who participates in a regular class safely and does not cry for three weeks in a row
Students are currently working on:
- being able to hold their breath, submerge (face down) and swim 10 feet comfortably and happily using dog paddle and kicks
Green Ribbon Level
A child who is a able to hold their breath, submerge (face down) and swim 10 feet comfortably and happily using dog paddle and kicks
Students are currently working on:
- Being able to swim dog paddle, taking five "pop-up" breaths without panicking
Blue Ribbon Level
Swimmers can take five "pop-up" breaths comfortably
Students are currently working on:
Starfish floats on their back for 10 seconds without assistance
Swim one length of the pool alternating (rolling) between their tummy and back (Jelly & Peanut Butter) while remaining horizontal on the surface
Swim/kick one length of the pool on their back (Peanut Butter)
Red Ribbon Level
Swimmers who can comfortably swim one length of the pool while demonstrating the following skills:
Peanut Butter and Jelly (alternating/rolling between their tummy and back)
Peanut Butter (swim/kick on their back only)
Up-Face breaths (Pop-ups)
Students are currently working on:
- Dive from the side of the pool in good form
-Surface dive to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool (six feet)
- Swim 20 feet completely submerged under water.
- Tread water for one minute (5 little monkeys)
White Ribbon Level
Swimmers who can comfortably demonstrate the following skills:
- Tread water for one minute
- Dive from the edge of the pool in good form
-Surface dive to retrieve objects from the bottom of the pool (six feet)
- Swim 20 feet under water
Students are currently working on:
- Swim one length of the pool freestyle in good form and with proper side breathing technique
- Swim one length of the pool backstroke in good form (no catch up arms)
-Kick one length of the pool with legal dolphin kick
Purple Ribbon Level
Swimmers who can comfortably demonstrate:
- Swim one length of the pool freestyle while maintaining proper form, body position and breathing technique (no catch-up style strokes allowed)
- Swim one length of the pool backstroke while maintaining proper form and body position (no catch up arms allowed)
- Dolphin kick one length of the pool
Students are currently working on:
- Swim two continuous lengths of the pool freestyle in good form
- Swim two continuous lengths of the pool elementary backstroke
- Swim 45 feet completely submerged under water
- Swim one length of the pool doing Monkey, Airplane, Solider. (elementary backstroke)
Orange Ribbon Level
Swimmers who can comfortably swim:
- 1 lap of Freestyle while maintaining proper form, body position, and breathing technique
- 1 lap of Elementary Backstroke
- Swim 45 feet under water
Students are currently working on:
Swimming one full legal length of:
- Freestyle
- Backstroke
- Breaststroke
- Butterfly
Gold Ribbon Level
Swimmers who can demonstrate the following skills as defined by USA Swimming:
Swim one length of the pool:
- Freestyle
- Backstroke
- Breaststroke
- Butterfly
Students are currently working on:
Swimmers who have earned their Gold Starfish award may further their swimming skills by trying out for the Pre-Competitive/Competitive swimming programs.
