This course will build on the foundation of the Ancient Civilizations course. Students will learn about the development of human societies from approximately 500 C.E. until contemporary times, up to and including the events of the past 10 years. Students will learn about the evolution of civilizations in Africa, the Americas, Europe, China, India, Northern and Central Eurasia, Southwest Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceania. A particular emphasis will be placed on understanding both the reasons for and the impact of the development of diverse human cultures. Students will continue to develop skills essential to social studies, including analysis of primary and secondary source texts, organization of information, knowledge of geography, placing individuals and events in historical context, interpretation of charts, graphs, and maps, methods of synthesizing complex ideas, and both written and verbal forms of communication. Students will work to improve upon important study skills, including time management, effective use of technology, note-taking, reading comprehension, and organizational strategies.
