This course explores traditional and contemporary techniques for creating three-dimensional artworks. Working with elements of sculpture such as space, form, light, mass, and time, students investigate the power of objects and personal narrative. From small scale to installation-size projects, students utilize MIAD’s Sculpture Lab and Emerging Technology Center to investigate how material and process can alter understanding through manipulation, replication, and transformation. Demos include casting, fabrication and interaction with plaster, alginate, clay and found objects, 3D scanning & printing, laser cutting, physical computing, machine learning, and virtual reality. Students create multiple projects and also learn how to document and mock up 3D work.
Prerequisites
Students must submit 10 images of original work to be considered for this program.
Special Needs
Students with a disability, whether physical, learning, sensory, or psychological, are encouraged to contact the MIAD’s Student Accessibility Coordinator, Nichole Uecker. Nichole’s office is located near the Library and Academic Succes Center in Room RL95B. Students must meet with the Accessibility Coordinator before they can obtain accommodations for their disability.
Deals
MIAD encourages students and families to be aware of scholarship and grant opportunities that are available from non-MIAD sources. Many scholarships that do not originate with MIAD are available to students who may qualify based on special skills, community activities, ethnic or racial heritage, or other criteria. Good sources of information about these scholarships are high school guidance offices, libraries, a parent’s place of employment, churches and civic organizations.
