This special rate is for any Oakland student under the age of 21. You must be currently enrolled in an Oakland school and show proof of your student ID card on the first day of class. Failure to show proof will result in student paying the full amount of class in order to continue with the class.
This American Red Cross certification class will prepare students to become certified lifeguards. Students must attend all sessions and pass the prerequisite swim test on the first day of class. No refunds will be given to those students that do not successfully pass the swim test. You must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class. Successful completion of the course will result in a two year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED. There is a $50 non-refundable fee to register for this class.
Prerequisite Swim Test:
1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breadth control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. There is no time requirement.
2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
