This fun history course explores the origins of our modern calendar: the ancient pagan calendar of Europe. The European civilization of Antiquity stemmed out of two geographic halves that evolved different cultures: one in the southern Greco-Roman empire and another in the northern Germanic world. Both halves shared common gods, however, named differently across cultures. This course demonstrates how the same ancient gods' live on through the names of the days and the months of our current calendar. Students investigate many languages: English, Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian, and explore the common linguistic and historical origins of the calendar. Students enrolled in this interdisciplinary course learn phonology and history through fun language exercises, and develop a lifetime interest in foreign languages, linguistics and history.
