This is a basic course for beginners. Students learn to play the saxophone by learning proper breathing and fingering techniques, hand positions, how to maintain good breathing, playing together and alone, and how to practice. Students will also learn proper care of the instrument and its history. A fundamental component of the curriculum is a focus on major female innovators of the saxophone. The musicianship portion of this course gives beginners a foundation for understanding the basic elements of music, i.e., Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form as well as development of aural understanding through weekly ear-training exercises. By the end of the course, students will be able to sightread basic music notation, will be able to perform solo and in ensemble, and will have a developing knowledge of its history and major innovators.

We offer full and partial scholarships to Oakland residents who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship applications are available upon request. We can also waive registration fees for multiple classes or families with more than one member enrolled.
