Roll up your sleeves and be ready to get your hands dirty! In this course, budding botanists, or plant scientists, will study the physiology, structure, and classification of common backyard herbs, vegetables, fruiting trees, and flowers. A scientific journal will be kept by each student to document lighting, soil, watering, and temperature preferences of various plants in preparation for successful planting and germination. Students will also compare, contrast, and evaluate different methods of urban gardening, including a method that requires no soil and even a method that uses fish waste as plant fertilizer! By the end of the course, students will be experts in planning, planting, and caring for both edible and aesthetic backyard gardens. On the final day of class, students will present their botany journals and will have the opportunity to take home a garden starter kit of their own. If you want to cultivate your green thumb, this class is for you!
