Recently the world has seen the power of the teenage voice, raised up, ready to create change. But our challenge as educators remains the same: how can we garner this passion while preparing students to raise their voices in educated and compelling ways? In this session we will work together to craft units on perspective writing for youth radio. We will explore a variety of methodologies to get students to their finished pieces including project based learning, blended learning, and explicit direct instruction; we will plan how to structure classroom activities to allow for small group instruction; and we will practice using the narrative tools needed for storytelling to intersect with research in effective perspective writing. You will walk away with a perspective piece of your own, PBL planning sheets, mini-direct instruction lessons, and a host of writing games to build community with one another and in your classrooms. This session is designed for both English and Social Studies teachers and will support the advancement of both novice and experienced instructors of literacy and writing.
All programs will be offered for two units. Participants can also elect to add a third unit by writing an “extra credit” paper.
