Research studies have shown that the increased risk of obesity that many children with ASD face may be due to the lack of adapted physical education (PE) and exercise opportunities. Children with ASD are often placed in non-adapted PE settings and have many negative outcomes resulting in less physical activity. However, additional studies have found that participation in an adapted martial arts program frequently provides physical, emotional, and mental health benefits for children with ASD.
The Adapted Judo Program for Children with ASD utilizes the strategies from successful adapted physical activity programs to teach the basic fundamentals of judo. Judo, loosely translated to “gentle way,” is a defensive martial art form originating from Japan. In comparison to other martial arts, judo is unique due to its absence of striking and emphasis on injury prevention. The goal of this program is to use judo as a tool to reduce the risk of injuries, encourage social interaction, improve anxiety and stereotype behavior, and provide a safe environment to engage in physical activity.
Class sizes are limited to a maximum of four students. This ensures that each student is given individual attention from the instructor to each student and creates a more personal and encouraging social setting. Students will be guided through exercise and stretching routines, taught how to roll and tumble, and lead through breathing and relaxation exercises. Most importantly, all students will learn how to fall properly, protecting their head and tremendously reducing the risk of injury.
