In this week long blacksmithing camp, participants will learn to wield hammer and tongs and to use the fundamental techniques in blacksmithing, such as drawing, tapering, shouldering, splitting, punching, drifting, and twisting. Using these techniques, campers will make both functional and creative artworks out of bent steel while learning safe work practices to practice the magic of forming steel.
This camp has a maximum of 6 campers and 1 instructor, allowing close collaboration and learning from peers with lots of opportunity for direct, real-time instruction from a practicing blacksmith and area middle school art teacher with 5 years experience in the field. Smithy camp is ideally suited for participants 12+.
Note to returning campers: Looking forward to smithing with you again! If you have something particular that you are interested in working on after having covered the basics in the past, connect with Garrett a week or longer ahead of the camp to discuss potential material solutions.
