Using the primary text of the Scriptures themselves, this course introduces students to God’s loving, creative, and life-giving labors with and on behalf of his creation throughout Salvation History. In the first semester, through a study of the Pentateuch, Historical Books, Wisdom Literature, and Prophetic Books, students will come to know the women and men who came to know God through his revelatory presence among and interactions with humanity. In the second semester, using the head and heart and through a close reading of the Gospels and Acts of the Apostles, as well as a study of the letters of Paul and others, students will appreciate Jesus Christ, as the Son of God, as the universal savior of humankind, as the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Hebrew Scriptures, and as the one who preaches Good News to all and inaugurates the Reign of God. Students will also explore the centrality of discipleship in the early Church and their own commitment to discipleship today, particularly in light of the ongoing labors of the Holy Spirit who guides the universal Church.
