Through engaging math and engineering activities, parents learn to reinforce mathematical skills students need to succeed in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) learning. Families get their hands on math and engineering, while having fun and developing logical thinking, spatial reasoning, creative problem solving and number sense together.
Participants leverage the engineering design process as they brainstorm, collaborate, design and build their way to creative solutions. Design challenges allow students to get an intuitive sense of mathematics, practice creative strategies for solving problems and develop the innovative thinking skills they’ll need for math and career success in the 21st century. Meets California Common Core Mathematics Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
Family Math & Engineering consists of free one-day classes focusing on math and engineering; no advance sign-up necessary. Attendance is first-come, first-served; please arrive 10 minutes early to guarantee your family’s spot in the program.
The four classes in the series are:
Class #1: Getting in Shape: Shapes, Symmetry and Structures: Explore the importance of shapes and symmetry from everyday objects to family-built model skyscrapers.
Class #2: Go the Distance: Measurement: Methods of measurement are put to the test as families engineer a device to fling a rubber band the farthest distance.
Class #3: A Grand Time: Telling Time: Discover how time flies as families design and build roller coasters and time their wild rides.
Class #4: Pattern Play: Logic, Classification and Patterns: Families play with patterns and logic through games and the construction of their own kaleidoscopes.
