Son Umbé is an urban youth ensemble (Ages 10-17) that centers the Afro-Mexican experience through an exploration and study of music. Students learn to play Son Jarocho of Veracruz, Mexico with traditional stringed and percussion instruments, get an introduction to song and dance, as well as explore social-historical experiences of Afro-Mexico. Violinists, violists, cellist, and bassists welcome!
Instruments provided; no experience necessary (at least 1 year experience for bowed string instruments such as violin, viola, cello, or bass)

We offer full and partial scholarships to Oakland residents who demonstrate financial need. Scholarship applications are available upon request. We can also waive registration fees for multiple classes or families with more than one member enrolled.
