Semesters 1 & 2
Spanish 1 focuses on the beginning elements of speaking, listening, reading and writing. This course will lay the foundations for future academic work and social interaction in Spanish. This course is designed to establish a solid foundation in Spanish grammar and vocabulary and to assist students in becoming proficient in Spanish in order to continue successfully in the upper levels. Students will learn through intensive class discussions and activities, extensive exercises related to Spanish grammar, and a study and development of hundreds of Spanish words and a number of idiomatic expressions through thematic units. Emphasis is placed on oral proficiency, pronunciation, and rhythm using everyday situations and conversations.
UC (a-g)/CSU + NCAA Approved
open to rising 8th graders
**Note for rising 8th graders: 8th graders are not eligible for credit according to most Middle Schools and High Schools. For example, if the student is admitted to Saint Francis, Spanish 1 will not be added to the student's official transcript, but taking this class may increase the student’s ability with Spanish sufficiently to enable him or her to place into Spanish 2 upon taking the Saint Francis foreign language placement exam after acceptance in the spring.
