Open Mind School utilizes a total communication approach. To best meet the communication needs of each student, we provide and challenge students to use various methods of communication. Students work on expressive and receptive communication skills.
They have access to social communication and pragmatic and articulation classes. When appropriate, students learn American Sign Language (ASL), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) or use a range of visual supports to aid in communication. Assistive technology specialists use a range of high tech voice output devices particularly using the LAMP layout or using eye calibration technology. When beneficial, specialists incorporate the use of low assistive tech through multiple choice options, alphanumeric boards, or typing.
