What You'll Do
Step up your duct tape design skills with a pair of durable DIY sandals. Start from the ground up with a sturdy, water-resistant sole, crafted from cardboard and covered in colorful tape. Learn duct tape construction techniques to fashion straps across the top, then B*e Reflective* as you try them on, testing for fit and tweaking for comfort. Embellish your sweet sandals with permanent-marker patterns, duct-tape decals or your own personal footwear logo!
Note: Kids will likely need a little extra time after class to finish their second sandal.
While we offer a similar class for older kids, the pacing and content of this class is carefully calibrated for rising 4th–5th graders.
What You'll Need
Materials
- 1 full roll of 2″-wide duct tape (ideally in 2+ colors)
- 2 pieces of thin cardboard (from cereal or other food packaging) that are bigger than your feet
- Black and/or colored permanent markers (not washable)
- Scissors
- 1 pencil
- 1 pair of your shoes for tracing
Technology
- Computer or tablet with speaker and camera
- Internet access
- Zoom application installed, signed in with child’s name
Additional Prep
- Check to see if your child can rip or cut a 4″ piece of duct tape off a roll by themselves. If they can’t (or if it’s tricky), use one of these methods to create a duct tape dispenser at their workstation before class:
- – Easy: Turn a chair or small table sideways and loop the duct tape roll(s) over a leg.
- – Less easy: Tape something long and rigid to the top of their workstation (ideally something wide at one end, like a wooden spoon), so that the wide end extends off the side of the table to hold the tape roll(s). Use a tape plus sign on the other end for extra stability. (Use painter’s tape if you’re worried about residue on your table.)
What You'll Take Away
Duct tape construction and decorating techniques
- The skills to be reflective and notice what is and isn’t working in your design
- A sweet pair of sturdy summer sandals
