The Beginning Reading Class is designed to provide a foundation in the language arts for kindergarten students. We find that children exhibit enthusiasm as they begin to read words in Chart 3 using the "Reading Code" to decode long and short vowel sounds. Students get reading practice through the First Focus "Read and See Books" which have interesting stories and pictures that are designed to reinforce reading skills taught in class.
Students in the Beginning Reading class will master the consonant and vowel sounds, confidently read long and short vowel words, and will gain confidence in reading multi-syllable words In addition, emergent readers will learn how to divide words into syllables and identify consonant digraphs and consonant blends. Students will also read short stories with purpose and understanding. Students will practice penmanship skills through activities designed to develop comprehension of written text and the spelling of words in short sentences based on their knowledge of sound-letter relationships.
