Welcome to the big school! First grade is a time of transitions.
Our first grade learners are getting used to the expectations that come along with being a “Big Kid at the Big School." In religion class we learn prayers, bible stories and the sacraments through art, music and a variety of experiences. We are a part of the weekly mass which helps us to live like Jesus. Our main goal for your child is to teach them to read.
First grade at St. Elizabeth provides curriculum for young learners with a solid educational foundation through carefully planned instructional goals and learning objectives. We believe strongly that essential learning skills, cooperative social behavior and good study habits are the foundation for an excellent education. Our teachers concentrate not only what children learn, but how they learn. We emphasize the active learning process. In this process we encourage cooperative learning, which includes problem solving and decision making skills.
Through our use of the Treasure Series, guided reading and leveled readers, each learner’s individual needs are met. This helps everyone become the most successful reader they can. Social Studies and Science are taught through hands on learning and field trip experiences. Go Math! Our math program helps us understand processes of math not just memorize facts. Through technology, games, using manipulatives and their work book we are engaged in our learning. Through writer’s workshop learners not only process the mechanics of writing but they are able to explore different genres of writing using mentor authors.
Technology use with i-Pads, Chromebooks, Osmo, and the Interactive whiteboard is woven naturally in all subjects helping us create learners who are self-assured, confident and ready for the world! This love for learning is what makes first grade the best!
St. Elizabeth offers all a lively and loving community with endless possibilities.
