U.S. History is a survey of the important political, social, economic, cultural, technological, intellectual, and diplomatic trends, events, and ideas that have taken place in the territory that now constitutes the United States. The course will begin with an examination of pre-Columbian American civilization and culminate with the study of contemporary American society, including the events of the past ten years. Students will write essays using primary source documents and original historical research. These will constitute a major focus of the assessment for this course. Students will be continue to develop and master essential social studies skills, including analytical thinking, analysis of primary and secondary sources, organization of information, historical research, placing events and individuals in historical context, note-taking, map, chart, and graph interpretation, verbal and written forms of communication, time management, effective use of technology and methods of synthesizing complex ideas.
