This course will build a foundation for future social studies courses. Students will learn about the evolution of human societies from their origins until approximately 500 C.E. Students will learn about the emergence of human civilizations in Africa, the Americas, Europe, China, India, and Southwest Asia. A particular emphasis will be placed on the development of distinct human cultures, the evolution and impact of world religions, and the emergence of diverse political and economic systems. Students will learn skills essential to social studies, including analysis of primary and secondary source texts, organization of information, knowledge of geography, placing individuals and events in historical context, interpretation of charts, graphs, and maps, methods of synthesizing complex ideas, and both written and verbal forms of communication. Students will work to develop important study skills, including time management, effective use of technology, note-taking, reading comprehension, and organizational strategies.
