The BYA Afterschool Center targets children and youth, ages 6-14, who are working below grade level in order to improve their overall literacy skills and to introduce them to the world of computers.
BYA provides these services through interns, both paid and volunteer, from UC Berkeley who will act as tutors, recreation leaders, role models and, most importantly, mentors. BYA offers tutoring, recreational activities, and computer training for 50-75 participants during the academic school year and recreational and computer services during the eight weeks during the summer.
Children and youth are taught skills on how to get along with others and team work through organized sports and other group activities. Participants primarily come from low-income families in the South and West Berkeley community and many are “high risk” due to multiple factors.
BYA feels that children and youth should have the opportunity to enjoy a safe, healthy childhood for as long as possible and should not be rushed into adulthood. By offering enriching, healthy alternatives in a safe and supervised haven, we are improving the chances of youth to stay in school and obtain higher education.
During the academic year, Monday- Friday, 1:30pm to 6:00pm, we provide afterschool and computer services. Activities include tutoring, recreational activities, health education, crafts, music, dance and computer instruction.
