Advanced Critical Reading (ACR) for grades 9-12 is a rigorous, lecture-based course that equips students with strategies for active reading, critical thinking, and analytical writing. Students will hone their skills as they study Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, “Civil Disobedience” by Henry David Thoreau, and other short fiction and nonfiction readings that are similarly thought-provoking. Lectures, discussions, quizzes, and six essay assignments will encourage students to deeply engage with the course material and writing process. At the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to continue refining their critical reading skills in Reading Level 2.
Prerequisites: An advanced level of English language understanding is required.
