Downtown Charter School

About

AMPS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public benefit corporation, founded in Oakland, CA in 1993 with the intent of creating charter schools that produce academic results and reduce the achievement gap among low-income students. The AMPS network flagship school, Oakland Charter Academy, is the oldest charter school in the City of Oakland, and was the twelfth school chartered in the state of California. For over twenty years, AMPS has been serving thousands of Bay Area families with effective academic programs that produce life-changing results. AMPS partners with communities, families, and educators to offer an exceptional public school education to low-income families. The AMPS network has continued to deliver a top-notch free public school education that has produced a National Blue Ribbon Award school, a California Distinguished School, and some of the highest performing middle and high school programs in the state and country.

We believe that a college education is the pathway to success and opportunity for any child, and specifically for disenfranchised populations. The AMPS program blends rigorous academics with an extensive focus on character development, at all grade levels, to prepare students for the demands of college, the workforce, and of life.

We aim to establish a continuous learning model for all AMPS stakeholders including staff members, students, families and governance members. AMPS operates six schools in low-income, urban communities across the East Bay.
