A cornerman is a combat sports term for a coach or teammate assisting a fighter during the length of a match. The cornerman remains outside the combat area during the fight, but close enough to support their contender through instruction and encouragement.
EOBA’s Cornerman mentor program aims to empower youth by providing the guidance and support needed to address their daily challenges and battles positively. Youth enrolled in the Cornerman program receive 1-on-1 personalized mentoring focused on their success in reaching goals and interest while improving their wellness at home, school, and in the community.
Program Impact
Cornerman Mentors will…
Conduct an entry assessment with the youth to identify interest, skills, and goals.
Develop a personalized progress plan that will support the youth in addressing challenges that prevent them from reaching successes academically, personally, and socially.
Meet with youth at least 3-4 times per month for sessions spanning 30 mins - 1 hr.
Facilitate meetings with school administrators and family members to ensure alignment of what the youth will need to achieve success.
Connect youth to tools and resources that will aid in achieving goals, and peaking interest.
Be a role model by demonstrating best practices that will shape reinforce goals ongoing support, guidance, advocacy, and coaching which is aimed at increasing academic and job readiness and overall wellbeing.
Provide extra support, follow-up, and mentoring through phone contact, home visits, school visits and family visits as needed.
