Expanding Your Horizons Conference - January 24, 2020 is an evening for 6-8th grade girls to experience fun, hands-on experiences with female mentors, who facilitate workshops and serve as role models. Attendees listen to a keynote speaker, explore Science City, attend a Planetarium show, and participate in a variety of workshops.
2020 Expanding Your Horizons Workshops
1. Top Secret Voting: Build an electronic voting machine that keeps your votes secret all while learning binary and digital logic.
2. The Current War: Light up the night by creating glowing salt circuits as you investigate electrical distribution of alternating current (AC) and distributing current (DC).
3. Conservation in Action!: Join the Kansas City Zoo and see what they are doing to protect and preserve our environment – and what you can do to help!
4. Build a Lung: Take a deep breath as you explore the respiratory system, discover how breathing works and understand why we need to breathe by building a working lung model.
5. Nervous System: Come and learn all about your nervous system as you get hands-on with interactive demonstrations that showcase what your amazing brain can do!
6. Practicing Science through Investigations! Come and play the way scientists do by investigating and use scientific skills and practices that will last a lifetime.
7. Skydiving Ninjas: Even ninjas feel the effects of gravity. Help your ninja land safely after reaching terminal velocity by designing your own parachute!
8. Building a Prosthetic Hand: Using a pneumatic system, build your own prosthetic hand that can pick up various objects.
9. Sky, Space and Beyond: See what’s out of this world in the Arvin Gottleib Planetarium as you soar to new heights exploring our sky and outer space!
10. What happens when a river floods? Learn from Engineers on what can be done to prevent/reduce river flooding by constructing your own riverbed.
11. Volcanoes: Be a geologist as you explore how volcanic drill cores are used in the field while creating your own erupting volcano!
12. Squishy Circuits: Mold, squish, and light up your way to learning about the basics of electricity and simple circuits using playdoh.
13. Slime Time: Is it a liquid? Is it a solid? Can it be both? Learn about Newton’s Law and why slime disobeys the law as a non-Newtonian fluid.
14. Paleontology – Study fossils, plants and animals: Become a paleontologist as you investigate different fossil preservation types and the science of how each type came to be!
15. Papercraft Math: Combine mathematics, mechanical engineering & papercrafts to make moveable paper sculptures.
16. Brr… it’s (not so) cold outside! Using special equipment to analyze authentic NASA data to understand the impact of the rapid rates that glaciers are melting!
17. Water Quality: Join the local EPA in understanding the importance of water quality and how they strive for the best in the work that they do.
18. Up, Up and Away: They float, they glide, they soar! Put your engineering hat on and get hands on designing, building and flying your own hot air balloon!
19. Tiny Humans, Big Science: Explore the profession of nursing using infant/child simulation mannequins.
20. Design your own Animal: Learn about animal adaptations and survival as you create your own “designer” animal that will be perfectly suited to a new planet’s environment.
