Students will learn the key concept in writing a paragraph: distinguishing between the topic sentence, the main idea and supporting sentences, the details. Students put this skill into practice by structuring an outline and creating interesting topic sentences. Then, we help students develop supporting sentences with fascinating details. In addition, students will be taught the parts of speech, capitalization, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling. The end result is that your child will develop a reliable strategy for approaching a variety of topics and write a personal paragraph that they are proud of and excited to share.
In the first week, students will focus on personal and descriptive narratives. In the second week, students will write informative and persuasive paragraphs. The lessons in the camp are designed to start with reviewing the mechanical conventions of a paragraph: the correct punctuation, grammar and spelling. Students are guided in the steps of preparing an outline (brainstorming) by making notes of ideas and then putting them in a logical order. In teaching the important traits of writing, students are guided to write clear, single focused topics, with sufficient, vibrant details to support that theme. Students are pleased with the outcome of an engaging and informative paragraph.
