This course is designed to introduce the student to the structure of the United States political system and the processes that guide and influence it. Through lecture, discussion, reading, civic participation, research and writing, the student will develop an understanding of the basic principles underlying our political system, as well as patterns of behavior and interaction between citizens and government and the impact that these interactions and behaviors have on the lives of US citizens and non-citizens. The course will focus on providing students with the essential knowledge and skills needed to be an effective citizen. Students will Students will be taught important college-preparatory skills, such as: the ability to analyze primary and secondary sources; to evaluate alternative interpretations of and perspectives controversial issues; to understand, interpret, and use graphical representations of data and ideas, including maps, charts, political cartoons; to present analytical arguments and synthesize complex ideas in both written and oral forms; to effectively use technology to acquire about and analyze complex problems.
