Campers explore Chinese culture and language through a wide variety of hands-on activities focusing on Chinese superstitions and ancient art this year. The camp aims to highlight key elements of Chinese culture and strengthen campers appreciation for global communities through collaborative, interactive lessons and activities. Campers learn new vocabulary, phrases and apply their language skills in group projects and presentations. It is a great opportunity to develop broader appreciation for Mandarin language and Chinese culture. Both Mandarin and non-Mandarin speakers are welcomed to join.
Every culture has its own superstitions. Chinese culture with its rich history is particularly rich in beliefs, customs, and superstitions. Why Chinese don’t sweep the floor on New Year’s Day? Why 8 is a lucky number and 4 is a curse? Why Chinese don’t flip fish on a plate or jab chopsticks in a bowl of rice?
Campers will be introduced to some of superstitions through Chinese Festival celebrations and daily life experience. Students will learn the symbolic meanings of these superstitions and carry out some fun activities to turn bad luck into good fortune. Campers will develop a broader appreciation for Chinese culture and showcase their learning through a Chinese Shadow puppet play on the final day of the camp! Let’s come explore with us!
