In this class, students will first enhance their ability to analyze an author’s argument by learning basic text structures and studying passages from previous SAT and ACT papers. Students will then go on to put their learning into practice, constructing their own arguments in writing. The class will also cover key elements of literature essays such as theme, thematic statement, thesis statement, topic sentences, analysis, synthesis, and conclusions.
The class will address common difficulties with English literature essays. It will also be useful preparation for the SAT, ACT, and for AP English Language and Composition. Selected texts and passages will be short, allowing students more time to refine their skills. The class is designed for high school students, and it is intended to be both instructive and enjoyable.
