“I’ll give you the whole secret to short story writing. Here it is. Rule 1: Write stories that please yourself. There is no Rule 2.” – O. Henry
In this class students will learn to express a single moment in time into an exciting, poignant, or emotional short story. Building on basic novel elements, students will compress an entire idea, theme, or event in a 7-10 page medium. Exercises will focus on the micro-short, the single page, and expand to a cohesive and complete story for publication in a class anthology.
TWI Online uses a mix of live class zoom meetings and daily lessons and writing activities posted daily to our virtual classrooms. The Art of Short Story will meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 10am for live meetings. These meetings will be recorded and made available to any student who was unable to attend within 24 hours of each class. On days that the class does not meet via zoom content will be posted to the virtual classroom for students to work through at their own pace. Students also have the option of attending daily all-camp write-ins via zoom at 12pm Monday-Friday.
Short Story Course Details
This class will meet virtually for a lecture and topic introduction on Mondays at 10am. A lecture introduction and prompts will be posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays, followed by a virtual “meet up” writing session on Wednesdays at 10am. During each session students will learn in real time, flexing their writing muscles and producing short pieces. On Fridays, students have the option of meeting (again virtually, at 10am) in a casual, open mic session to share progress, read their work, and hone their skills. Students will meet individually with Ms. Jayne at least once during the lecture cycle, and can purchase feedback for an additional fee.
A minimum of 5 students must be enrolled in this course for it to be held online.
