What does it take to become a strong academic writer? (Hint: it isn’t fake writing formulas or five-paragraph essays; these are intellectual short cuts that fail students in college). Strong academic writers have a powerful grasp of purpose, audience, and the writing process. They have developed the habits of mind of writers and the skills to write coherently about any topic. They’ve had writing experiences that allow them to see themselves as writers who have important ideas to convey. In this class, students will be coached through high-interest writing experiences to practice the moves of strong academic writers. We’ll learn skills that work in any writing situation, especially one that will blast through writer's block, helping them become “perpetual writing machines.” In addition to these writing adventures and lessons on the writing process, we’ll study the art of sentences, practicing how to play between the commas to up our writing game. In addition to writing to engaging prompts, we will give feedback to each other to learn how to read like writers. In session one, the focus will be on analytical writing, while session two will focus on argumentative writing.
TWI Online uses a mix of live class zoom meetings and daily lessons and writing activities posted daily to our virtual classrooms. The Art of Academic Writing will meet Mondays and Fridays at 3pm for live meetings. These meetings will be recorded and made available to any student who was unable to attend within 24 hours of each class. On days that the class does not meet via zoom content will be posted to the virtual classroom for students to work through at their own pace. Students also have the option of attending daily all-camp write-ins via zoom at 12pm Monday-Friday.
