Success Chess School is excited to announce our virtual summer chess camps for intermediate and advanced level players! Each week will have a different focus; from the study of the greatest games of current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, to exploring some of the most aggressive openings in chess, every camp will be unique.
Students will engage in active discussion during each day, under the guidance and direction of our best coaches. Students will compete in in-class tournaments with their fellow students each day, applying the lesson they’ve learned to the game they play. We will use zoom for instruction and chesskid.com for tournaments and in class competitions.
Here's a list of weekly topics - sign up for whichever class if of most interest!
Week 1: 6/13-6/17 M-F 10am-12pm
Tackling Tournaments: A camp entirely devoted to improving tournament performance with a series of practice drills, mock tournaments, and timed game studies to keep students pushing themselves to use the skills they are developing.
Week 2: 6/20-6/24 M-F 10am-12pm
Tactical Truths: The focus of this camp is to push our tactical strength to the next level with a variety of puzzles, activities, game studies and exercises designed to strengthen our understanding and capability with specific tactics each day. By the end of the week every student will have added new powerful tools to their tactical repertoire.
Week 3: 6/27-7/1 M-F 10am-12pm
Chess by Centuries: Looking through the greatest games of the 19th, 20th, and 21st century, our camp will study and dissect the way chess was and is played through the last 221 years. History is the greatest teacher, even if some of that history is in the making!
Week 4: 7/11-7/15 M-F 10am-12pm
Mighty Magnus: Our camp will focus on some of the greatest games the best player in the world has played. Magnus’ mind for endgames and his willingness to experiment in his openings, makes for truly unique masterpieces that we can study and emulate to strive for excellence ourselves.
Week 5: 7/18-7/22 M-F 10am-12pm
Endgame Excellence: Chess has a beginning, middle, and an end, but often the longest part of chess is the endgame. This week we will learn the ideas behind holding your advantage, the actual power of your pieces, and the patterns you need to win, or draw, a difficult endgame position.
Week 6: 7/25-7/29 M-F 10am-12pm
King’s Pawn Openings: Since the dawn of chess, the primary openings have been involving the king’s pawn, and the queen’s pawn. This week will focus on the ideas and concepts behind opening with e4, and how to navigate the very balanced openings that arise. e4 is the most common opening in chess by far, and we will explore the most popular e4 openings in our camp.
Week 7: 8/1-8/5 M-F 10am-12pm
Queen’s Pawn Openings: Since the dawn of chess, the primary openings have been involving the king’s pawn, and the queen’s pawn. This week will focus on the ideas and concepts behind opening with d4, and how to use these ideas against players who are so used to playing against e4.
Week 8: 8/8-8/12 M-F 10am-12pm
The Russian School of Chess: Some of the greatest players of the 20th century were Russian grandmasters like Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, and even among today’s rising stars, Andrey Esipenko. We will follow the school of thought and the fundamental ideas that make these Russian players the greatest in the world.
Intermediate players have played chess before, know how the chess pieces move and how to castle.
Advanced players have been playing chess for a number of years and/or have played in chess tournaments.
We offer family discounts and financial aid for those who qualify.
